Vote for your favorite, week 2

Three to choose from, two exercises and one piece of transcribed music from Phantom. I might be showing favoritism for old things or showing how old I am. Don’t think of them as old or dusty, think of them as having a nice patina:

• a green or brown film on the surface of bronze or similar metals, produced by oxidation over a long period.
• a gloss or sheen on a surface resulting from age or polishing.
“the dining table will acquire a warm patina with age”

#1 is the snare part to the 1996 Phantom show. The transcription is from 3:55 to 4:17.

#2 is a spree from a corps that’s no longer around. After the Marion Cadets and Cincinnati Glory merged in 2000 this appeared.

#3 is another exercise, this from the Bluecoats. I think we were handed this in the winter of 2000.

This is the first episode. Testing some things, talking about some things. In it we’ll talk about the “loser conspiracy” within drum corps and how to get out of a rut, or to increase your motivation.

There is a cadence you can download and play along with (LINK). You can learn how to submit your drum lick to the “lick of the week” to be featured on an episode and share your sheet music.

There’s a video going around of a woman playing the drums, many people say it’s your grandmother, it’s not, but here’s the exercise (LINK) and how to find more of her chop-filled drumming videos.

Lick of the Week #1

You can have your drum lick featured on the site and in the next podcast. Send your audio and sheet music (pdf) to You can vote on the next drum lick to be featured on the homepage.

This lick is actually a complete cadence written a long time ago – Cadence One – written for 5 basses and a group of hardcore mofo’s. You can learn more about it by listening to the latest episode. You can also download the complete score for it: LINK
